Selecting Public Sector Employees
Many of the jobs within the public sector are unique: police officers, fire fighters, teachers,
public policy analysts, social workers. Therefore, recruiting and selecting individuals to
work in the public sector may be more challenging than those in the private sector.
Discuss the following:
The general set of knowledge and skills that candidates in the public sector should
possess (for instance, knowledge of the political process); then
Devise a recruitment process that would enable a public agency to recruit the best
candidate for a public sector job. As an example, the process may begin with a detailed job
description (not necessarily common in the public sector) followed by specific websites that
attract public sector employees.
