A more interesting possibility is that these findings call into question the very ways we define self-esteem, and the supreme value we place on it in Western culture. Perhaps science measures this construct in a limited way. Perhaps self-esteem involves more than feeling relatively as good or better than comparison others. But perhaps this is not a measurement issue; rather, it is the value we place on self-esteem as an index of a life well lived that we must question.
