About the Download

Introduction
The proposed network design of the billing company has been taken up as under.
Following is the overview of company business requirements.

4 employees working inside the building.
Running Head: SMALL BUSINESS NETWORK

Possibility of remote access to server

Data store in a file server.

Internet/email

Wireless network

Printing

Data backup

Information security procedures.

Cost against the budget

Selection of a guaranteed internet link with enough bandwidth.
2
Overview of the design

The design of the network is based on the above requirements.
In addition to wireless network two workstations and server will have wired access as a
backup. However there will be no permanent cabling included in the design and only the
workstations connect directly to router using CAT 6 cables.

Remote access to server will be done by using remote access VPN built in the router.

File server use to store data. Users will have shared folders mapped to their pcs .
Wireless LAN for all users and for printing

High quality LaserJet printer.

Data backup will be taken to an external USB hard disk and store offline.

Security procedures such as physical security, data security, use of a firewall, data
encryptions, Mac address filtering (“What are the different”, 2012).

The budget of the network implementation should be within $5000. Further the monthly
operational cost should be within 500$.
The use of internet link is important

Email will be host in a third party hosting and the client will have POP email accounts
(“Email Plans”, 2012).

Design overview
Server file storage
The server will be used as file server. Total disk capacity of the server is 1TB (3*500GB
SATA hard disks mirrored using RAID 1 (“Which RAID Level”, 2012). Users access shared
folders at the server. Shared folders are mapped to a user’s PC. Backup of the server files are
taken in to a 1TB USB external hard disk and storage is offline. All the working files are saved
in the server and user specific files are saved locally in user pc hard disks. Backups are
scheduled using Microsoft Windows NT backup. Server is supported by a 3 year warranty care
pack.
Wireless Router
450Mbps broadband dual WAN router is used for internet and wireless access. Built in 4
LAN ports are used to connect pcs or printer and server as required. CAT 6 cables are used for
connectivity. A Router firewall is enabled and hardened to prevent security related threats. Only
a set of safe IP’s from outside are permitted. Router includes built-in VPN service which will be
used as remote access by employees.
Workstation and Notebooks
Running Head: SMALL BUSINESS NETWORK
All the workstations and notebooks are running on Intel core i3 processor with 4GB
RAM. Workstations connect to server using wireless USB dongles.
Printer
Multifunction wireless printer is used for printing. Printer includes printing, scanning and
fax. Printing technology is thermal inkjet.
Internet connection
The internet connection use is Digital Subscriber Line (DSL ) provided by XMission a
popular ISP in the Utah area (“How to order DSL”, 2012).
Maximum speed guaranteed by the ISP is 7Mbps Uplink/downlink.

Domain and Email hosting
A Unique company domain name will be used for email accounts. Domain and the email
account are hosted in a third party hosting provider. Emails are accessed using Microsoft outlook
pop accounts and download to psts. Mailbox capacity per user is 500Mb. Domain names
have .com addresses and email plans include 10 email addresses.
Domain and email hosting provider is https://www.godaddy.com

Security Design
Physical security

Server and the router will be installed in server room. Server room has glass doors with
locks and fire/burglary alarm.

There will be a security personal in the office.
Running Head: SMALL BUSINESS NETWORK

Main entrance will have security cameras and alarms.
Logical security
Router firewall is enabled allowing remote VPN access to employees and denies other
ports.

6
User login passwords policies and user awareness programs.

Use of client firewalls and antivirus protection

Wireless SSID broadcast will be disabled. Users should enter the SSID and credentials
manually.

Use of WPA/WPA2 encryption

Mac addresses filtering and sticky mac addresses for internal users and devices.

Use of strong complex passwords.

Cost benefit analysis
The fixed cost of hardware and software items are marginally higher than the budget. This can be
further reduce by following
Use of non-branded assembled PCS.

Use of free Antivirus software such as Microsoft essentials.

Use of open source software. (REDHAT Linux)

Avoid purchasing of optional items (USB adapters)
Purchasing a standalone printer.

How ever the following benefits are present with the current purchasing plan
Branded PCs parts are available in the market

3 Years warranty provides long term cost benefit.

Use of non-open source software is secure

Support services available.

All-in-one printer provide more business opportunities.
Future expansions are well support.
