Big Data: Benefits and Challenges
Big data brings with it both benefits and challenges. The benefit is the unending stream of information that can be used to improve a vehicle’s performance. The challenge is converting the massive amounts of information into usable data that can be used to compile and analyze information.
The Integration of Cloud Infrastructure into Volvo’s Networks
Volvo’s use of numerous sensors collect data and immediately send it back to be collected and analyzed to the central information system located in the Volvo Data Warehouse. The information collected is distributed to various networks to so it can be reviewed and organized. The networks use the information to determine possible flaws in components and correct them before they become major issues (“Collecting,” 2013).
The cloud infrastructure in place in Volvo’s information system integrates every network into one cohesive database. Every bit of data collected from Volvo’s vehicles is directly funneled into the data warehouse and used to evaluate the quality and integrity of all of the parts used in its construction.
The Challenge of Converting Data to Knowledge
Collecting large amounts of data is the easy part. The problem arises when companies try to convert massive amounts of data into usable information. Normal operating systems cannot handle excessively large amounts of data. Big data requires a system capable of handling exabytes and zettabytes of information. Systems able to handle big data are extremely expensive and very complicated to operate. Finding the resources to support and maintain these types of systems takes is another challenge of big data.
Real Time Information Systems and Their Impact
Big data systems provide real time information. Information obtained in what is known as “real time” can be used immediately upon retrieval. Data collected during the research and development process can identify issues early in the manufacturing process. This information can be relayed back through the supply chain so mistakes and defects can be corrected before the finished products end up in the hands of the consumer. Information can be collected, analyzed and utilized within a matter of moments in an attempt to improve the overall performance of the vehicle and its components (“BI Solution,” 2013).
Issues reported through the extensive data network can be sent to whoever needs to receive it in order to utilize it fully. Mistakes found in early in the life of a part can save the company thousands of dollars over time. Volvo’s use of real time information helps maintain its place as one of the highest quality automobiles on the market. The real time nature of the information the company receives helps to keep them ahead of their competition.

Volvo’s ability to collect and utilize mega amounts of data provides them with a distinct advantage over other automakers. While many manufacturers do not find out about defects until after the vehicle is at the dealership, Volvo learns about them while the cars are still in the research and development phases. The ability to find and correct issues in this stage of production allows immediate measures to be taken. The majority of issues Volvo experiences are found and corrected long before a consumer takes possession of the vehicle. (3)
With all of the challenges big data brings presents, the benefit of immediate and usable knowledge far outweighs the expense. Patrons of the company appreciate the high quality found in Volvo’s vehicles and return repeatedly because they perceive their cars to have above average value. Volvo customers appreciate the efforts the company puts into their cars. The company’s continued efforts to improve their vehicles have proven to their customers their dedication to quality and workmanship.
